News: Apple to Skip M6 Pro and Max Mac Chips, Fast-Tracking AI-Focused M7 for 2027 Launch

Apple M6 base chip and canceled M6 Pro Max processors roadmap leading to AI focused M7 silicon

Apple Inc. is shaking up its Mac silicon roadmap in an unprecedented move. The tech giant is skipping a high-end chip generation entirely to accelerate its artificial intelligence capabilities.

According to a recent report by Bloomberg News, Apple will release its base M6 processor as early as this year for entry-level Macs but will completely skip higher-end Pro and Max configurations for that generation.

Instead, Apple's next line of high-performance chips will arrive in 2027 under the M7 banner. This strategic pivot marks the first time since the transition to Apple Silicon in 2020 that a base chip generation will not feature accompanying Pro or Max versions.

The move is designed to fast-track powerful on-device AI capabilities and graphical processing to meet the growing demands of modern software.

While the Pro and Max tiers are skipped for the M6 generation, pro users looking for immediate desktop upgrades can still expect an M5 Ultra chip for the Mac Studio later this year.

"Apple plans to launch a base M6 chip and then jump ahead to the M7, M7 Pro, M7 Max and M7 Ultra, skipping higher-end M6 processors," Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported. "Apple skipping the M6 Pro, M6 Max and M6 Ultra will be a first in the history of Apple Silicon."

The standard M6 chip will focus on improved memory architecture, pushing memory bandwidth from the current M5's 153 GB/s up to 200 GB/s. However, the M7 family is where Apple is placing its heaviest bets.

Slated for the first half of 2027, the M7 lineup will introduce a massive leap in hardware-accelerated machine learning processing to tightly integrate with next-generation operating system tools.
