As smartphones officially become the primary portal to the digital world for millions of global users, cybersecurity experts are raising alarms over a dangerous gap in user security habits.
A new comprehensive global survey released by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky reveals that personal computers are rapidly taking a back seat to mobile devices, even as smartphones absorb increasingly sensitive personal, professional, and financial responsibilities.
According to the survey's findings, 58 percent of all global respondents now rely on their smartphones as their main device for accessing the internet.

This behavioral shift is particularly pronounced among Generation Z users aged 18 to 28, with a staggering 67 percent reporting primary reliance on mobile devices.
Today’s smartphones function as digital wallets, confidential communication portals, and productivity hubs, storing essential banking credentials, sensitive work documents, medical records, and saved passwords.
Despite this deep reliance on mobile infrastructure, the study highlights a critical disconnect: user cybersecurity practices have failed to keep pace with the elevated threat environment.
Essential security measures—including turning on multi-factor authentication, routine operating system updates, installing reputable security software, and auditing application permissions—remain widely neglected or applied inconsistently across consumer groups.
This widespread laxity comes at a time when cybercriminals are aggressively targeting mobile ecosystems.
Kaspersky previously documented a 29 percent year-on-year increase in attacks targeting Android smartphone users, driven primarily by banking malware, malicious third-party applications, and tailored phishing schemes.
Security professionals stress that as mobile devices replace traditional desktop computers, adopting basic hygiene practices must become a core daily habit rather than an afterthought.
