Meta has officially updated the credential and account security framework for WhatsApp, introducing alphanumeric password support, enhanced caller context, and multi-device passkeys.
The primary structural upgrade replaces the traditional six-digit numeric PIN used in two-step verification.
Users can now establish an alphanumeric password incorporating uppercase letters, numbers, and special characters to protect against account takeover attempts.
Additionally, Meta disclosed that over one billion accounts have activated passkey authentication, expanding the feature to allow multiple passkeys across connected iOS and Android hardware.
For Android users, an updated incoming call screen now surfaces metadata on unknown callers, including country of origin and shared WhatsApp groups, aimed at curbing deceptive tactics.
"Two-step verification is getting stronger. Until now it was a six-digit PIN; we’ve now upgraded it to a full password: longer, alphanumeric, and even with special characters to make it harder to guess." — Meta Official Statement
